We're Capable of More
A while back, my dad asked me if I wanted to run a ten mile race with him. I had really let myself get out of shape over the last 3 years and knew that obligating myself to this race would force me to get off the couch and move a little bit. Plus, there was no way I was going to let my dad show me up! So, I accepted the challenge.
“When is the race?” I asked.
“It’s the Ten For Texas. Ten Miles on October 10th,” he said.
That only gave me 8 weeks to get in shape! Is going from not running in 3 years to running 10 miles straight within 8 weeks even possible?! I guess we’ll see. I hung up the phone and immediately searched online for a running plan. The plan I found had me running 5 days a week. Knowing that I wasn’t going to break any speed records, my only goal was to run without stopping. Before I knew it, I was down 20 pounds and running further than I ever had before!
You Can Do More Than You Think
On the morning of October 10th I ended up finishing the ten mile race faster than I had hoped! In just 8 weeks I went from an overweight couch potato with no energy to running a ten mile race! I never thought I could do something like this!
I understand that a ten mile race isn’t the farthest distance, but it’s not the shortest! Maybe you have ran further, but it was more than I thought I could do in the amount of time I was given. And now who knows what’s next! Because I have already done more than I thought I could do, it’s making me think of bigger and better things. A half marathon? A FULL marathon?? A THOUSAND MILES?!? Ok, maybe I’m getting carried away, but you get my point.
While training for my race, I started reading books about ultra-marathoners. An ultra-marathon is simply any race that is longer than the traditional marathon length of 26.2 miles, usually 50 or 100 miles. Sometimes longer! One man, Scott Jurek, recently set a speed record for running the entire Appalachian Trail, 2,178 miles in 46 days, 8 hours, and 8 minutes! Isn’t it incredible what our bodies are capable of doing…without God! God has created us to be able to accomplish amazing things in the natural world.
In her book “Switch on Your Brain,” Dr. Caroline Leaf explains that when believe certain things, our bodies produce chemicals to back up that belief. If we believe we’re healed, our bodies naturally produce healing chemicals. God has created us to naturally accomplish more than we think we can!
What If We Added God To The Mix?
Even without a dependency on God, we are able to heal ourselves, create ingenious inventions, and push our bodies further than we ever thought! I can’t help but wonder what would happen if we actually started trusting in Him more.
What if we stopped limiting God because we think we’re not good enough, smart enough, good looking enough, or any other negative thing we think about ourselves? God has created us all for more. Not because He needs more from us, but so we can experience the abundant life that He’s provided for us!
John 10:10 says that His desire is for us to live an abundant life. That means we should be living at a level higher than anything we can attain for ourselves. What would happen if you stepped right outside your comfort zone, the territory where you know you can’t do it on your own? The territory where you need help from the Holy Spirit (John 14:26) and power that extends past anything you can do on your own (Acts 1:8).
“I want to be living a life that needs a supernatural explanation!”
God wants to show you off. He wants others to see that having a relationship with Jesus is better than anything you could ever do on your own. Again, we don’t do these things in order to receive anything from God. We’re already blessed with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3) and in complete right standing with Him (Romans 5:17), but I want to be living a life that needs a supernatural explanation! When people look at me, they should see the power of God. When people look at me, they should want what I have.
