How To Rest In Christ

"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest.”
Matthew 11:28 (MSG)

There are so many believers out there who are tired and burned out and they have no idea why. They are doing everything they have been told to do. They are giving more, serving more, and desperately seeking God yet they are miserable in the middle of it. What are they doing wrong?

Although giving and serving are good things, it’s not what provides real fulfillment in life. Jesus said all we have to do is come to Him and He will show us how to take a real rest. It’s important to understand that all the things we’re doing for Jesus are not what define our relationship with Him. There’s something else that Jesus wants from us even before we do a single thing. He just wants you to rest.

Am I really telling you to do nothing?! No, that’s not what I’m saying. Resting in Christ is not doing nothing—it’s the complete opposite. Resting will actually launch you into a life full of purpose! So, what is this rest we are talking about? A story that shows this is found in Luke 10:

Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesusfeet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”

And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:38-42

Resting in Jesus is doing what Mary did, sitting at Jesus’ feet and hearing His word. Jesus said that’s the one thing that’s needed. As you do that, you will begin to discover your God-given purpose!

Don’t get so distracted by the doing that you don’t take time being. That’s why we’re called human beings, not human doings! Once you take the time to rest in Him, you will get stirred up to do what God has ultimately called you to. Resting doesn’t mean do nothing, it just means to take the time to listen to what God says about you.
