Authority of the Believer
And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.
Did you catch that? Jesus gave them power over unclean spirits and over all kinds of sickness. That means they didn’t have to plead with God or ask Him if it was His will for them to be healed. The power was already given for them to do it!
That’s so different than how we normally think. When I first learned that healing was possible, I would pray for people and ask God to reach down with His big godly hand and heal that person. I hoped it would happen, but wasn’t overly surprised when it didn’t. Maybe God didn’t feel like it that day. Maybe that person’s faith wasn’t where it needed to be. Whatever the excuse was, it wasn’t my fault.
But Jesus gave us the power. The word “power” in Matthew 10:1 actually means “authority.” The dictionary defines authority as “the power or right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience.” That means Jesus has given me the power to enforce obedience over unclean spirits and all kinds of sickness!
While I was a Bible College student, I worked in a prayer line. Many times, when someone was healed or had some sort or miracle take place in their life, they would call back to give a praise report. Every morning when I got to work, I would check the praise reports to see if anyone I had prayed for called in.
Months went by with no praise reports! Not one! I was frustrated, and began questioning my ability as a minister. I asked God what the problem was and Mark 11:23 came to me. I opened my Bible and read,
For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.
The Lord told me that I wasn’t speaking to the mountains, I was speaking about the mountains. If someone called about a hurt knee, I would say, “Father, I command healing into that knee. Thank you for healing that knee.” He told me that I have the power to heal that knee and, as weird as it may feel, speak directly to the mountain.
So, the next time someone called, I said, “Knee, be healed in Jesus name!” It felt weird, but guess what. Praise reports started coming in. I would check the list every day and my name would be all over the place!
If you need a healing, you don’t have to beg and plead with God to move, He’s told you to move. You can speak to you mountains and they will move. You can lay hands on the sick and see them recover. You have the power of God alive on the inside of you, so use it!
