Discovering Your Purpose

One of the most common questions I receive is, “What is God telling me to do with my life? I get it. It’s an important question, but one that might be missing the mark. We become dissatisfied with where we are in life and believe that by finding this great purpose God has called us to, we will be fulfilled in every area of our lives. While I completely understand that mentality, there is a step before that kind of fulfillment of our purpose that we often ignore. I truly believe we each have an individual purpose from God – one that will bring more happiness and fulfillment than anything we could ever produce on our own – but without an understanding of the love and grace of God, we will continue to fall back into something that God never intended us to fall into.

Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart.

Psalms 37:4

First, we must understand what it means to delight ourselves in the Lord. Plainly put, your relationship with God should be a delightful one! If you are afraid of what God is going to do to you if you step out of line, you’ve missed it. If you think God is behind your pain, lack, or sickness, it will be impossible for you delight yourself in Him. I can’t tell you how often I look at that verse and remind myself of the importance of resting in God’s presence and allowing Him to love me right where I am, mess and all.

Delighting yourself in the Lord simply means knowing that He delights in you! Grow in your understanding of His Fatherly passion that only wants you to succeed. Stop focusing on what you’re ultimately called to and just rest in the good news that you are completely loved and accepted by the creator of the universe.

Desires Of Your Heart

Notice how Psalm 37:4 doesn’t say that “He will give you what your heart desires.” This isn’t just some magic trick that will get you that Rolls-Royce you’ve been wanting. I’ve seen plenty of rich people who are absolutely miserable since true happiness doesn’t come from material possessions.

When you delight yourself in the Lord, He will give you a desire in your heart! Things will begin to spring up on the inside of you that you never even considered before! Then, you simply follow that desire. Will that include a Rolls-Royce? Maybe. That’s between you and God. What I can tell you is that your Father wants you to live a life that’s greater than you ever dreamed of! (John 10:10 MSG).

I was once told that the Lord will call me to something that I don’t want to do so I will have to depend on Him more. This is completely false! God is not some task master who is making you do something that you will absolutely hate. He is a Father who wants what’s best for His children.

When you delight yourself in the Lord, a desire will grow on the inside of you. It won’t be something you are required to do, it will be something you want to do! When the desire to start a church came to me, it wasn’t something I was supposed to do, I wanted to do it! As I spent more time resting in His presence, the desire grew stronger and stronger. Then I acted on it!

God has a purpose for your life, but you can’t find it if you haven’t taken the time to delight yourself in His presence. His love isn’t withheld until you fulfill your purpose. Rest at the feet of Jesus and allow Him love you where you are. When that becomes your focus, a new desire will rise up on the inside of you – follow it.
